 When it comes to room acoustics in Hong Kong, one of the most common and frustrating issues is standing waves, especially in small environments. If you notice sudden booms in the lower frequencies, harsh mids, or piercing highs while playing music, it’s likely due to the effects of standing waves in your listening space.

 The most common solution is to use bass traps to absorb the frequencies generated by these standing waves. However, most commercially available bass traps are too bulky, making them difficult to bring into homes. Even if you manage to sneak one in, having a large object in your space might turn your “bass trap” into a “home trap.”

 Japan’s Acoustic Revive has launched the RHR-21 in 2024, which may be the world’s most compact bass trap. Its surface features a design with 25 pits, inspired by the Helmholtz resonance theory (Utility Model No: 2023-003995). This unique arrangement allows it to perform with the effectiveness of a typical bass trap while being as small as a soda bottle. The small size is crucial for easy placement in your listening space, making it simpler to find the optimal position without taking up too much room, ensuring that household members won’t complain.

 The RHR-21 has 25 precision-engineered pits of varying depths that effectively target low frequencies between 30-100 Hz. Additionally, it can eliminate unnecessary reflections and frequency deviations in your listening space, improving the phase characteristics during music playback. After use, it enhances the clarity and texture of instruments and vocals, providing more accurate instrument positioning and a wider soundstage.

 Using the RHR-21 is very simple; it can be placed in the corners of the front or back walls, near speakers, or behind audio racks where standing waves tend to accumulate. The shallowest pit among the 25 serves as the focal point (see reference image). For first-time users, it’s recommended to follow the manufacturer’s placement suggestions to find the best-sounding location. The manufacturer also suggests using two units simultaneously for maximum effectiveness.
